My Sculpture at Woman Made

Amanda

When Chicago's storied art gallery Woman Made announced their theme for an upcoming juried show, I was moved. Invisibility: Existing at the Periphery spoke to everything I've been thinking and writing and creating about since I first started experiencing symptoms of an invisible disability back in 2014. (One published piece in which I wrote most directly to this theme was my essay for Electric Literature.) In fact, I had so much work about invisibility that choosing how I wanted to address the curator's statement took me many weeks of reflection, but I knew that I definitely had something to say about it. That's why I am thrilled that my sculpture "Otobiography" (previously exhibited at the Toledo Museum of Art) was selected for inclusion in the show. Not only because it's an honor to be in the company of so many talented artists and exhibit with a gallery I admire, but because I feel I have succeeded in some small measure in my efforts to make the experience of living with disability visible. With this acceptance, I have been "seen", and that is powerful.

Check out this piece and all the other compelling work, on view now until August 31 (and archived after that). Click on the "See the Work" tab then feel free to head over to my Art page, for a look at some of the other work I've made.)
